It is the next evolution of management. Unlike Industry 4.0 (which focuses on the evolution of economic activity concerned with the processing of raw materials and manufacture of goods), management 3.0 focuses on leadership of organizations.
Management 1.0 Are the management guidelines created during the Industrial Revolution to manage workers in factories in a systematic and efficient manner.
Management 2.0 Are management principles that are used basically today. It's the evolution of management to a higher level to manage not factories but organizations. Things such as strategic planning, HR management, marketing & branding, etc.
Management 3.0 Are the management practices for the 21st Century. An era of innovation and disruption. When rules of Management 2.0 are no longer sufficient and companies need to be creative, agile and resilient.
The need for the shift
Disruption is not new. More than 100 years ago, the Ford Motor Company made the automobile available to many, which revolutionized transportation. The buggy and the horses were on the way out and motorized vehicles were in.
In most cases, companies facing disruption generally have longer to respond than they expect. Consider the decade or more it has taken for Amazon to meaningfully disrupt traditional retail. In other cases, disruption can happen almost instantaneously, like the Coronavirus pandemic.
No one can predict exactly how much disruption will take place, therefore companies need be innovative and resilient. In order words, companies need to be agile.
Management 3.0 = Agile Organizations
Agile organizations are different from Agile project management. Agile project management is an iterative approach to project management that focuses on breaking down large projects into more manageable tasks, which are completed in short iterations throughout the project life cycle.
An Agile company is a business that has the ability to quickly adapt to market changes. There are some of the key characteristics of an agile company. Some of the characteristics are:
- Leaders that are more than operational but entrepreneurial mindsets.
- Leaders that create a culture of learning, growth and experimentation.
- Leaders that are able to co-create with the marketplace and involve their teams.
- Companies that are agile in their structures (vs. silo or fixed).
- Companies that have strong cultures and are vision-driven.
