It is said that no two people are made the same way. We are all unique beings with our own set of wants, needs, beliefs, values and motivations driving us and shaping us into the people we are every day. While we are always encouraged to accept and celebrate these differences, the reality isn’t always that rosy.

As beings driven by emotions and feelings, we tend to take differences very personally. The perception of a slight or offense could cause friction even between individuals in a family. Imagine what happens, when people from different walks of life, different backgrounds and different experiences come together to work in an organization? Friction is but natural.

People with different beliefs, work styles and preferences are put together and asked to work together to achieve one common goal. While this is the case everywhere, what we tend to unrealistically demand is the complete absence of friction.

All of us do need to work together to achieve the larger organizational goal, but that should not come in between expressing, ourselves, our disagreements or even new ideas. Only when we disagree and discuss in a healthy manner do we, grow, learn to respect each other and work with each other effectively. If we try to hush up conflicts and bury our heads in sand, we are only providing a space for dissent and frustration to flourish.
